so we actually have some GTA 6 news I
know it’s been a while but this one’s
actually really interesting Now this
video is going to be a lot shorter than
normal because I want to get straight
into the information and if you guys
find the really short and compact
information useful please make sure to
like and subscribe I appreciate it
massively and I’m aiming to get to 50K
subs by the end of the year So Take
Interactive have filed a new patent
patents I’m going to get that mixed up
throughout the whole video but patent or
patent whatever you call it And this is
basically for character animation Now
this was actually filed in September of
last year but it was only recently
approved Now the way this usually works
is a company will file a patent for a
new technology that they’re working on
and of course it has to go through an
approval process And during that
approval process anyone else can submit
a dispute So if someone finds that this
particular filing infringes on their
their system their copyright their
trademark whatever it might be they can
actually dispute it and then of course
it doesn’t go through or more steps
follow Well in this instance the actual
file link has been accepted Now this new
technology is pages and pages and pages
and pages and pages and pages of
information but it all gets to
effectively the same point which
hopefully I can explain to you now So if
we go back 20 years characters in games
had animations Characters would walk
they would jump and it was quite blocky
More often than not there was little to
no transition between these two actions
But coming into the last 10 years new
technology is being developed so
animations look a lot more smooth Now
the patent that Take 2 interactive have
filed which is on behalf of Rockstar
which we’ll get to very shortly The end
result which is more fluid animations
where the environment and the world
around it will affect the character with
the ability to actually apply these
animations to pre-existing characters
isn’t really a unique concept Many
companies over the years have done
similar things and even now built into
Unreal Engine there’s many built-in
stock features that do the same thing
But Rockstar build their games in their
own unique game engine the Rockstar
Advanced Game Engine otherwise known as
Rage So the actual patent really doesn’t
mean too much because all it is is an
exact methodology to get that end result
of more fluid animations with the
ability to actually apply these
animations to different sizes and shapes
of characters within Rage So effectively
for another company to infringe on their
patent they really would have to be
using Rage and copying the exact same
processes to get to the end result These
are just filed as a formality and they
kind of protect Rockstar from well
funnily enough modding in the future but
every major business files patterns to
protect their technology So it’s
understandable Now you’re probably still
a little bit confused about what all of
this means and how it all works Well
just to explain this in the simplest way
I understand it and the simplest way I
can convey it In the early days
obviously we had character animation
trees where essentially the character
would run walk and all of those things
that we’ve just discussed However coming
into the 2010s we had more advanced
technology like mocap which was being
used a lot more But the problem with
mocap is on a person they are a set
height Say if someone’s 6′ tall their
joints and their ligaments are the same
length And that means that all of those
applied animations only really work on
characters that are a similar build
shape size and all of that to that
particular person Now what this means is
is for loads of different NPCs in the
game or loads of different characters
you’re going to need to keep doing mocap
over and over and over again And more to
the point this actually limits the sizes
shapes and builds of all the characters
you can have in the game So this new
system filed by tape to interactive is
essentially Rockstar’s ability to take
existing animations existing motion
capture and apply that to characters of
different shapes and sizes And we can
see this a bit more in depth in the
document where they start talking about
things like bone length and different
facets of the characters build and shape
Essentially what this means is they’ve
created some sort of technology that
understands the variables of how someone
with a smaller stature may walk in
relation to a bigger stature So they can
essentially take motion capture
information or even just pre-programmed
animation which has been worked off off
the back of motion capture and redevelop
that into character animation for not
just NPCs maybe online characters
especially if we’re customizing our own
characters in GTA online This gives
Rockstar a few key major benefits The
first major benefit is that they’re
going to have to spend less time and
less money on building and developing
character animations And they can then
spend that time and money in other
places to improve the game But also at
the same time this means that when it
comes to Grand Theft Auto Online this
should give us more options for
character customization Maybe we can
customize the run style Maybe we can
change some different things Maybe our
character height will affect how our
character moves gets in and out of a
vehicle These are the sort of meta
details that Rockstar really goes into
every time they introduce a new game And
obviously with where technology is now
it looks like Rockstar is definitely
heading in that direction And this
patent just confirms that Now in a
patent that we looked at last year there
was a few key bits of information So
Rockstar working on a animation system
which basically moves away from the
blackboard model Now the blackboard
model is basically a system of nodes
where the character behaves a certain
way However with this new updated
blackboard model that they’ve filed a
patent for essentially this means like
things like rain or running uphill or
whether you’re tired or drunk whatever
it might be in the game this can affect
how your character’s animations work
with a I wouldn’t say it’s AI but it’s a
form of intelligence in the way that it
approaches your character animations Now
this is where different forms of kind of
AI come into this sort of stuff And AI
is such a loose word because artificial
intelligence technically doesn’t exist
only large language models and whatever
but that’s a different video But what
they’re trying to summarize in these
documents is that they’re basically
trying to break away from the boundaries
of programmed animation and go into more
procedural animation based on
environmental factors Now with Take to
Interactive they usually file all their
patents when they’ve finalized each
piece of software because obviously
there’s no point in filing a patent and
then filing another one 2 months later
when you’ve actually finished it So I
reckon we’re going to start seeing more
and more patents being filed and
accepted even coming up to the release
date of GTA 6 and probably even beyond
as well Now two questions you may have
is one how do we know this is for GTA 6
and two what does this all mean so the
first thing I’m going to address is the
actual cosigns and the inventors of this
particular technology Well they’re
Rockstar employees They’re actually on
the credits of Red Dead Redemption 2 And
this isn’t for any of Take 2
Interactive’s other companies because
all of the names are Rockstar employees
So it isn’t for Mafia for example Now
the next question is what does it all
mean well it essentially means
everything we’ve just gone through We’re
not going to have simple animation trees
anymore and we’re going to have
different software and systems that
expand past what we previously seen by
Rockstar So all in all the characters
movement animations and interaction with
their environment is going to be far
more believable than anything we’ve seen
before Now it is worth noting we did see
some snippets of this in the 2022 leaks
but there was a lot of things in the
2022 leaks that looked like they were
being based off Red Dead Redemption 2’s
engine It’s entirely possible that
there’s been some major tweaks and the
implementation of all of these patents
were seen filed by Take 2 over the past
year or two Maybe all of these weren’t
actually in the leaks and now have been
added What I’m trying to say is when we
get the game hopefully later this year
we are in for a shocker of how much new
technology is going to be in the game
that we haven’t even seen yet And it’s
really hard to say from that first
trailer of what technology is actually
going to be in the game because it’s
hard for us to decipher what’s a
programmed animation what’s a cutscene
or what’s actually done in engine
actively It’s really hard to say So yeah
I’m excited You should be too And this
is actually the first proper thing that
I’ve got excited for in about four
months in relation to Grand Theft Auto
So so drop a comment down below of all
of your thoughts If you did enjoy please
