GTA 5 is finally getting the next gen
upgrade we’ve all been waiting for on
February 20th Rockstar officially
announced that a free upgrade is coming
to PC on March 4th bringing a huge leap
in graphical quality PC players will
finally get access to full Ray tracing
including ambient occlusion and Global
illumination on top of the ray traced
shadows and Reflections that first
debuted on consoles back in 2022 that
console upgrade was decent but let’s be
real it didn’t change much visually the
biggest addition was Ray traced
reflection but since they were locked to
Fidelity mode at 30 FPS most players
never even use them this time it’s a
total game Cher ambient occlusion and
Global illumination are going to make a
massive difference especially
considering how old GTA 5’s engine is
just as a reminder this iteration of
Rockstar’s rage engine debuted in 2013
with the original release of GTA 5 on
PS3 and Xbox 360 sure it got upgraded
versions for PS4 and Xbox One in 2014
followed by the PC release in 2015 but
at the end of the day we’re talking
about a 10-year-old game and let’s be
honest it shows for someone like me
who’s obsessed with Graphics
improvements playing vanilla GTA 5
without mods like chromatics or natural
vision is rough that’s why I’m actually
excited that Rockstar is finally giving
us an official upgrade making GTA 5 look
even better while we wait for GTA 6
another huge Improvement coming with
this upgrade is official support for AMD
FSR 1 and 3 plus Nvidia dlss 3 up until
until now GTA 5 on PC only offered FXAA
and msaa for anti-aliasing and let’s be
honest those are ancient at this point
FXAA is a cheap post-processing
technique that Smooths Jagged edges but
blurs the image in the process msaa
provides much cleaner visuals but the
performance hit is massive especially at
higher settings meanwhile FSR and dlss
work completely differently instead of
Brute Force rendering these Technologies
use Smart upscaling to generate a higher
resolution image with much better
performance for the last few months
months I’ve been using pure dark’s dlss
mod for GTA 5 and it’s been a game
changer I barely notice any FPS drops
even at high settings now that Rockstar
is finally adding this natively we won’t
have to rely on mods anymore to get
sharper visuals and better performance
and if frame generation is included
that’s even bigger this Tech is already
widely used in games like cyberpunk and
Allen wake 2 where it dynamically
creates extra frames to smooth out
gameplay and boost FPS especially at
higher resolutions if works as well in
GTA 5 it could significantly improve
performance even on weaker gpus then
there’s the faster loading times thanks
to SSD optimizations and direct storage
support for compatible devices this one
really has me curious because the
difference in loading speeds between an
SSD and an HDD is already huge even
right now GTA 5 loads significantly
faster when installed on an SSD so I’m
really wondering what rockar plans to do
to make it even faster if they’ve
properly implemented direct storage we
could be looking at near instant load
load times which would be a massive
Improvement especially for players who
are used to sitting through long startup
screens another big upgrade is enhanced
support for higher resolutions aspect
ratios and frame rates this is great
news especially for players who
struggled with ultra widescreen support
until now GTA 5 had a lot of issues on
21 and 32 by9 monitors for some the
entire game looked stretched while for
others the HUD was stuck in the middle
of the screen like a 4×3 aspect ratio
with no option to fix it higher frame
rate support is also interesting because
right now GTA 5 maxes out at 188 FPS but
here’s the thing players have noticed
that going above 150 FPS can actually
break the game in fact most people cap
their frame rate at 140 FPS just to
avoid game-breaking bugs one well-known
example is the mission complications if
you start it with a frame rate over 140
it will always fail if Rockstar is
finally addressing this then maybe just
maybe we’ll be able to fully unlock lock
GTA 5’s frame rate without worrying
about weird physics glitches or Mission
breaking bugs among the smaller but
still notable upgrades we’re also
getting dual sense controller support
with adaptive triggers and enhanced
audio including Dolby Atmos support and
improved sound Fidelity for speech
cinematics and music as for the Dual
sense features it won’t really change
anything for me since I stick to an Xbox
controller anyway but the audio
improvements are actually interesting
GTA 5 already sounds great and since I
have an audio system with Dolby Atmos
support I’ll definitely test it out to
see if there’s any noticeable difference
now let’s talk about the recommended
system requirements because a lot has
changed as you can see in this
comparison the upgraded GTA 5 Demands a
much stronger build than before for
starters Windows 10 with the latest
Service Pack is now the minimum
requirement but if you want the best
experience Rockstar wants you on Windows
11 they’re also finally ditching ancient
CPUs moving to Modern mid-range
processors from the last few years the
ram requirement has doubled and dual
panel memory is recommended for better
performance and when it comes to gpus
there’s no more room for Budget cards
Rockstar now requires at least four gigb
of vrm with 8 plus recommended for the
best results plus ssds are now a must no
more slow-loading hdds of course this
doesn’t mean you’re locked out of GTA 5
if your PC doesn’t meet these new
requirements Rockstar confirmed that
support for the previous version of the
game will continue meaning anyone with
older Hardware can still play the
non-upgraded version without any issues
you should o hold off on upgrading if
you plan to keep playing 5m because the
mod won’t support the upgraded version
of GTA 5 right away the 5m team has
confirmed that server owners should keep
running the existing version for now as
official support for the upgrade is
still in development they haven’t
provided an exact release date yet but
promis to keep players updated as things
progress it’s pretty nice of them that
the old version of the game will remain
supported in 5m so players who can’t
meet the higher system requirements of
the upgrade won’t be left behind once
support report for the new version is
ready server owners won’t be forced to
switch immediately meaning some will
likely stay on the old build While
others move forward however there won’t
be any crossplay between the two
versions so servers will have to pick
one or the other with all this in mind
the next few weeks could get pretty
chaotic some players will stick with the
older version others will move to the
upgraded one and 5m servers will likely
be divided until everything is fully
supported if you rely on 5m it’s
probably best to wait before upgrading
to avoid any unnecessary issues modding
is also about to become a mess and I’m
almost certain that this upgrade will
break at least 90% of existing mods that
means we’re probably looking at a long
wait before all our favorite mods get
updated simple texture mods and basic
scripts might still work but things
could get a lot more complicated when it
comes to vehicle add-ons and models
especially if Rockstar changes shaders
or rendering techniques one thing that’s
almost guaranteed is that Graphics mods
like chromatics or Quant 5 won’t be
compatible with the new version so we’ll
have to wait for updates before getting
them to work again and I’m not going to
lie I’m really curious to see how much
GTA 5’s visuals will change compared to
the current state even with new Ray
tracing features I wouldn’t be surprised
if the game still needed some extra
enhancements here and there at this
point I’m so used to playing with
Graphics mods that I honestly doubt
rockstars update will match the visual
improvements modders have already made
they’ve added volumetric clouds inspired
by rdr2 improved lighting and most
importantly fixed outdated textures that
Rockstar never touched one of the
biggest issues is Road textures which
have aged terribly and could really use
higher resolution versions if Rockstar
doesn’t improve them then the game will
still look outdated in certain areas
even with new rendering techniques
that’s why I’m really hoping modders
find a way to make their work compatible
as soon as possible let me know what you
think about this update is it a great
move from Rockstar or should they just
move on from GTA 5 and put all their
focus on six to me this whole upgrade
kind of feels like Rockstar’s farewell
to GTA 5 the end of an era is coming
fast and from what we know there’s only
one more GTA online DLC left before
Rockstar moves on completely after that
there shouldn’t be any more major
content planned for five and the next
big thing on Rockstar’s schedule is
trailer 2 for GTA 6 it really seems like
Rockstar wants to leave GTA 5 in the
best possible shape making sure the game
holds up for years to come even after
six arrives but at the same time this
might be the last major support update
we ever see after over a decade of
Updates this could be the final push
before Rockstar fully shifts its focus
to the next chapter
